They’ve been designed, screwed and welded, and now the new generation of trains from Siemens is finally here! The new generation of Railjet offers passengers even more space, comfort and privacy.
The design team, comprising ÖBB, Siemens and the renowned British design studio PriestmanGoode, has redesigned the train from the ground up (the “greenfield approach”) and adapted it to the current needs of our passengers. The main benefits include more privacy, greater comfort and more individuality. One new feature is time-of-day lighting control with ambient lighting.
With more than 500 seats, open-plan cars are not the only innovation; the popular Business Class and 2nd Class compartments are also back. They offer more privacy for business travelers and families in particular. Quiet zones and family zones have also been brought back on board.
Given that it’s not just about where you sit, but also how you sit, the new Railjets are all about comfortable seating. There are no prefabricated “shells” in the newly developed, extremely comfortable seats. They can be individually adjusted in two ways, are equipped with a footrest and the double seats can be converted into a kind of full-length bench seat sofa in a few simple steps. To do this, the centre backrest can either be folded up or lowered. All of this offers greater flexibility for individual seating positions and more frequent changes of position, which is better from a health perspective, especially on longer journeys.
What’s more, some of the seats are slightly raised – this means you always keep a close eye on your luggage, which can be stowed conveniently and securely directly under your own seat or in the new lockable luggage racks. In 1st Class, the seats are made of high-quality leather and surrounded by real wood. Every seat in 1st and 2nd Class has a power socket and a USB charging point. There is also an induction charging option at each bench seat, allowing passengers to charge devices wirelessly. Each bench seat is also equipped with a folding table and a small shelf – for a smartphone, for example.
A modern travel information system, free Wi-Fi and improved mobile network connectivity ensure that the journey flies by. It goes without saying that a pleasant journey also includes appropriate refreshments. There are 6 seats on bistro benches in the on-board restaurant and 6 seats at the bar. For those who prefer to enjoy a snack at their own seat, there are several snack zones throughout the train where passengers can purchase snacks and hot drinks from one of the vending machines. There are also a few useful travelling accessories such as headphones.
The trains not only meet the latest EU requirements for barrier-free travel, ÖBB has also consulted with the Austrian Disability Council (ÖBR) and optimised the design for people with disabilities and adapted it to their needs as effectively as possible. In the new Railjets, the size of the tables at the wheelchair spaces has been increased, for example. Barrier-free low-floor access is possible in 7 of the 9 coaches. The toilets in the low-floor cars can of course be reached from the low-floor seating area with no steps to get in the way.
We also have good news for all those who like to take their bike with them when travelling: the 6 storage spaces eliminate the hassle of lifting the bike up – instead there are straps to secure it, a major improvement for e-bikers in particular. Skis and snowboards can of course also be stored here. All the storage spaces are located in a low-floor car and can be easily accessed via a bicycle ramp.
